Hey visitors! I'll do a quick post about some random specialized stuff I found from the past few months. Most importantly, they are free as usual.
Effect Texture Maker - Link A nifty fast loading site that allows you to create a variety of commonly used textures up to 1,024 resolution. It also allows users to animate the effects, generate sprite sheets for them as well as apply toon and normal mapping options. i2Deals by Inter-Illusion - Link This isn't a real plug-ins or tools website but could be even better. This site automatically source for discounts (some that goes free for a limited time) and list them out. Might make it a habit to come here occasionally if your development frequently uses asset store resources for rapid-prototyping. Monobit Unity Networking - Link Do note that this plug-in belongs to a Japanese studio. If using Unity Networking or the widely known Photon isn't going your way, this might be one of the rare solutions to try out. It allows up to 100 users to connect concurrently for Free. Any population more than that would incur a cost. They are also additionally working on cool stuff such as VR Voice Chat and the package should be available to download for free on their site. Anatomy 360 - Link A useful one for artist regularly needed realistic references. The main software for this is paid for but just registering for free enables anyone to reference tons of useful anatomy references from the male and female body to heads and hands. Nifty. That will be all for this post. Thanks! Do share the resources to your friends and colleague who would benefit from it and comment if you have your own recommendations! Seeya~

Hey everyone... so a lot of you readers would be using Unity in a lot of your indie games and you've always wanted to achieve a certain visual feedback or effect. Many of the times, we are not equipped with enough technical knowledge to script certain complex shaders (neither might it be easy to find via Google). The following is a non-exhaustive list of what I ever came across:
Shaders Laboratory - Link Very great place to learn how use their shaders with their shader code provided to you right there. They have a full blown YouTube playlist right here at their channel if you'll want to look at their frequently updated cool stuff. They deal mainly with 3D effects. - UV Rotation, Wireframe, Dissolve, Outline - Fog, Mosaic, Noise and even Oil Painting! Minions Art - Link They are making a cat game! Besides that, do support their Patreon if you can afford the extra cash. It'd be especially useful for 3D modelers with them providing their assets and stuff. Other than that, there are a couple of free shader source code they've used for their games: - Toon Lit Dissolve - Particles Alpha Blended Mask - Particles Additive Mask Andrii Indie Developer - Link 2 really useful shaders there, do donate if you could spare the extra penny. - Light Rays 2D - Pixelate Ryan Nielson - Link 2D Outline Shader! Prolly something that may people might need. He also has a couple more on his site and teaches about 2D graphical optimization in Unity. Bonus 2D Jelly Shader Project - Link An abandoned project but it has an extensive guide and demo project on its pretty sophisticated Jelly Shaders inside. Worth a look if you're looking to make that jiggly game you've always wanted. Ciao~! Do comment if you've something to share! All resources above are rightfully owned by their creators and if you may benefit from their stuff, do credit them or donate to them (if available). Throughout my needs as a designer in both context of academic and professional, there are just times when we need to scourge for free but quality resources. Thankfully for the internet, we have a couple of well-hidden free (or at least free-ish) resource sites which I'll cut to the the chase and recommend below:
Mockingbot - Wireframing Tool (Cloud-based) https://mockingbot.in If you're in need to deliver mock-ups quickly and hassle free, MockingBot is definitely the way to go (or at least in my opinion for the many resources I'm going to list). It may not be as robust as the popular InvisionApp or the recent Adobe eXperience Design but it definitely offers the basic with a really low learning curve. It can do up wireframes, create simple interaction and transitions in a jiffy. It even shows you an overall interaction map of all your wireframes altogether. If required, the pricing plans are definitely looking economical if you need more storage and co-workers working on the same wireframes. 2Dimensions Nima - 2D Rigging and Animation (Cloud-based) https://www.2dimensions.com A recent find and still in beta. I may not be much of doing 2D animations but this is really worth a check. They seem to rock a really clean UX for an animation pipeline: bone-based, inverse kinematics, weight painting and animation-curves workflow. All your works will be done in the cloud and can be showcased via their gallery, kinda also serving as a portfolio for professional 2D animators out there. This definitely places competition for similar installation-based software such as Spine or Live2D with a price tag on them. Sonniss GDC Audio Bundle (20GB+) http://www.sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc2017/ Sonniss has been doing this for 3 years straight with bundles from 2016 and 2015 respectively. You gotta request for the 2015 download links since they have taken it down. There's gotta be enough content in these bundles for much of what any small to medium scale games might need (with a little of mixing and editing of course). Texture Ninja (Free Textures) https://texture.ninja Many people often struggle with finding 3D textures with simple Google (they just don't turn up without watermarks yea?). This is one of the sites that offers quite a bunch of realistic textures commonly needed: materials, doors, signages, etc. Support the patreon if you might benefit from a fuller list of textures. This marks the end of my first resource post. Do share these resources to many fellow devlings that might have a need for them. Bon Appetit! |
